The Journey in Kansai (2024)
I traveled to the Kansai region at the end of 2023, which was also my first time traveling abroad. Last year’s travel notes received great interactions, which made me very happy.
It was late autumn by then, and the maple leaves had almost fallen, so it was a bit of a regret not being able to enjoy the sight of the mountains covered in red leaves. A few days ago, while scrolling through Xiaohongshu, I came across some beautiful photos of red leaves, which inspired me to plan this trip. I took 5 days off and combined them with the weekends before and after, giving me a 9-day itinerary. In reality, the first and last days were spent preparing for departure and returning, so the actual travel time was 9-2=7 days.

Day 1 Arrival - Osaka
The flight was at 2 p.m., so I arrived at the airport 2 hours in advance. Left home at 10:15 a.m. and took the subway at a relaxed pace.
While on the subway, I found a card in my pocket. Took it out and, oh my god, it was my work ID 😅. I should have put it in its proper place before leaving home, of course.
Before takeoff, I saw a small car driving around the airport. It looked kind of cute.
I had already selected a window seat through the airline’s app. During the flight, it was really pleasant to look out the window. Right after takeoff, I could see the Lujiazui trio (the three iconic buildings) in Shanghai, but the smog was quite bad.
When it was about to descend, the clouds looked really beautiful, like ribbons.
Landing soon, opposite is Awaji Island。
After landing, I went through immigration and took the Nankai Electric Railway to the hotel. Since I had saved the hotel map link in my notes, I could easily open Apple Maps with a tap, which made navigation really quick and convenient. I realized I wouldn’t make it in time to the Osaka Expo Park for the fireworks (it wasn’t in my original plan), so I went straight to the hotel to check in and drop off my luggage.
The temperature in Osaka is a little lower than in Shanghai, and the electric train already had the heating on. The heaters are located under the seats, which made it feel like sitting on a heated platform. After sitting for a while, my bottom was so warm it was almost too much!
It’s Saturday today, and hotel prices in Osaka city have skyrocketed (a hotel that’s normally ¥400 during the week is now ¥1000+ on weekends). Based on advice I’d gotten from travel guides, I booked a hotel in Sakai city. From Kansai Airport, it took about half an hour on the Nankai Electric Railway heading towards Namba to get there.
Arrived at 堺(Sakai)。
The hotel is right in front of the station, so it’s very close and convenient. There’s a mall next to the station with KFC 🍟, McDonald’s 🍔, Starbucks ☕️, MUJI, and Aider Wang (a local electronics store). I bought a coin pouch at MUJI, which will be useful for storing coins during the rest of my trip. I bought the one in the picture, priced at ¥690.
I asked at Aider Wang in the mall, but they didn’t have the new iPad mini. I’ll check again tomorrow when I’m in Osaka. After casually browsing around, I hopped on the train to head to the next station 七道(Shichidō). I went to Uniqlo to buy some clothes because I only packed underwear and one set of clothes for this trip. I bought two thermal tops at Uniqlo. Since the upcoming weather isn’t very warm, I didn’t want to wear a thick coat (I’d get too hot on the train), so I opted for something warmer to wear underneath.
After buying the clothes, I returned to the hotel to freshen up and get ready to rest. I checked the weather forecast, and it looks like tomorrow will be sunny, so I’m planning to hike the Takao-Daigo Nature Trail in Kyoto.
That’s all for today—good night!
Day 2 Kyoto - Kaohsiung, Tokai Nature Trail
I got up at 6am, before dawn. I checked out at 6:40am and headed to Osaka to leave my luggage. At Nagahoribashi Station, the lockers only accept coins, but I didn’t bring any, only banknotes. I simply left the luggage at the hotel, which is about a 5-minute walk away.
As always, when I open Apple Maps and Google Maps, I choose Apple when the routes are the same, and I choose the faster one when the routes are different. I feel that Google’s navigation triangle arrow is not as sensitive as Apple Maps.
First take a bus to Kyoto.
I took the bus to 姆之尾, got off at the terminal stop and head to the first destination 高山寺。
There are people waiting for the bus to go back so early.
After getting off the bus and walking back a little, you will see the visiting sign and go up the stairs to the ticket office.
Then we continued to walk back and went to Ximing Temple. There was a bridge with nice scenery. The scenery of the bridges on this small river is good. The ticket is also 500 yen. You can enter the temple to worship.
After leaving Ximing Temple, continue walking for a while and you will reach the foot of Jingoji Mountain. I did not enter this temple because my focus today is the Tokai Nature Trail. At the rest stop at the foot of Jingoji Temple, eat some dry food you brought with you, drink some water, go to the toilet, and you are ready to go. There is a sign marking the route.
The sound of gurgling streams filled the air. The air in the valley was very humid, and it rained occasionally. Many parts of the trail were made of original stones, but they were slightly filled with cement to make the stepping space wider. It was not difficult to walk, but it was not easy to walk either.

I’m afraid of Bears.
The teenagers were sitting by the river.
After reaching Kiyotaki, I took the wrong road and left the Tokai Nature Trail. It seemed that Atago Temple was just across the tunnel. I took the winding mountain road from another direction and made a detour, but I also arrived at the entrance of Atago Temple.
The old man walks very fast.
There shouldn’t be any bears, I think.
Finally arrived at Arashiyama. What does it mean that the door of this house is filled with mineral water bottles?
The sun finally came out.
After arriving at Arashiyama, I sat by the river for a long time. When I looked up, I was surprised to find a rainbow in the sky.
The big flying birds in the Katsura River are catching fish and eating them. It is quite interesting to observe quietly.
I came down from the mountain covered by dark clouds. To be honest, as an office worker who lacks exercise, my ankles felt very uncomfortable after walking down.
Sunset.
I went to a ramen restaurant tonight, just wanting to eat something salty. The soup was really thick and greasy, and I was not disappointed, haha. Although I couldn’t drink the soup, I still wanted to eat it.
You can still see some sunset glow in the distance.
Day 3 Kyoto - Mount Hiei
Today’s destination: Mount Hiei. In fact, I haven’t decided where I want to go today. I only have one big goal, which is to go to Kyoto. Mount Hiei was a temporary decision.
I set an alarm for 6 o’clock last night, thinking of going out early the next day to avoid the crowds. As a result, I was too sleepy and couldn’t get up. Sleep until 7:30.
Wash, have breakfast, and go out at 8 o’clock. According to the navigation, first take the subway to Umeda, then transfer to JR to Kyoto, and then transfer to Kyoto local train to Mount Hiei. The journey takes 1 hour and 40 minutes. It seems that when I go out, it happens to be the local people’s working time. The Osaka subway is very crowded, super super crowded, very, very crowded, like dumplings.
The first stop on Mount Hiei I went to the old bamboo forest. There is a table in the hall where you can take pictures of the reflection effect of the courtyard. The Little Red Book says it is the replacement of Liuliguang Garden. But I couldn’t take a picture of this effect😅I took some pictures, sat there for a while, and then walked up to Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine.
It would be very pleasant to drink tea here.
Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine is quite large and fun to visit.
I got out and found the navigation to Sakamoto Station to take the cable car to Enryakuji Temple. The round trip cable car costs 1660 yen. You can overlook the view of Lake Biwa, which is very nice. It is really big. I walked around until 4:30 and came down. I think it would be a good experience to take the cable car down from the other end of the mountain, but I bought a round trip ticket so I returned the same way.
Have a cup of tea.
This tree feels familiar…
That’s it!
Overlooking Lake Biwa.
The lights were on on the way back, and the lights shining on the maple leaves were also very beautiful.
I took the train back to Osaka. I wanted to eat Sukiyaki tonight, but when I got to the restaurant, I found that if I didn’t make a reservation, I could only sit down and eat after 8:30. So I went out to eat ramen. I chose a mapo tofu ramen restaurant for 1200 yen, but I thought the taste was just average.
After dinner, I went to Big Camera and bought an iPad mini. This iPad was bought for my mother. My mother is still using the iPhone 12 that I discarded. She feels that such a small screen is very uncomfortable for her eyes to look at every day; but a tablet that is too big is not easy for the elderly to hold. So the mini is the most suitable. I asked the clerk and found out that it was in stock, so I bought it.
Day 4 Osaka - Minoh Park, Katsuo-ji Temple
The alarm clock rang at 7 o’clock. I didn’t stay in bed today. I jumped out of bed. I washed up, had breakfast, and packed my schoolbag.
Today’s weather forecast shows that there will be heavy rain in the afternoon, so I don’t want to go far. Finally, I decided to go to Minoh Park. Although it is in Osaka Prefecture, it takes 1 hour to take public transportation.
Walk to Shinsaibashi and take the Midosuji Line to Umeda and transfer to Hankyu. Umeda is really a big station. Walk around and pay attention to the signs.
Arrived at Minoh Station, it takes about 3 kilometers to walk to Minoh Park. The road is lush and green, and the temperature today is not bad, not cold or hot, it’s quite comfortable.
I walked all the way to Minoo Falls and sat there for a long time.
Because the weather forecast for today indicated that it would rain heavily in the afternoon, I planned to go back early. At about 11:30, I took a different staircase than the one I took when I came in. I found that it was a road when I went up. There was a sign next to the road indicating that it was a 3-kilometer walk to Katsuo Temple. I thought that if I walked back 3 kilometers, I would also walk to Katsuo Temple 3 kilometers, so I might as well just walk forward. After walking for about 40 minutes, I finally arrived, and my legs were sore.
There is a bus stop at the entrance of Katsuoji Temple. I checked the departure time in advance and took photos. I plan to take the bus down the mountain on the way back. There are many people queuing at the entrance of Katsuoji Temple. There are seats to rest in the reception hall. I bought a bottle of hot drink and took a break before going in. The ticket includes a postcard. You can get the complete pattern by stamping it with a seal in the order of worship. I haven’t stamped this and don’t know what it is used for, so I realized that I had missed the first stamp and simply didn’t stamp it. If I have the opportunity to come again in the future or go to other places where there are such postcards, I will know how to stamp them.
The maple leaves in the temple are redder than those in other places, and there are some gradients of red and yellow, which I think are also very beautiful, with a very autumn atmosphere. The temple is very popular. Although the elderly at home will burn incense and worship Buddha, but when I came to Japan, the Japanese system of gods and Buddhas should be different from that of China, so I did not worship Buddha when visiting these temples.
After shopping, you can take the bus to the station. The station is also a shopping mall where you can go shopping and eat, and then go back to Osaka. After returning to the hotel, it started to rain heavily. It was still early, so I didn’t go to eat dinner. I rested in the hotel until 5:00, and went out to a Lanzhou ramen restaurant for dinner. I didn’t want to eat noodles at night, so I ordered a meal for 1300 yen, which included mapo tofu rice, pickled radish, and spicy chicken. The portion was quite large and I was very full. This price is more satisfying than an ordinary bowl of ramen. After dinner, eat pudding to end the day, good night.
At 10:50 pm, I felt the earthquake. It was a creaking sound…
Day 5 Kyoto - Eikan-do, Kamagawa
It was still a very “free” day. I hadn’t decided on a specific destination before I left. The main reason was that the weather was not very good, a little cloudy. I thought that Eikan-do Nanzenji Temple seemed to be a good time to enjoy the maple leaves, so I turned on the navigation and set off. I took the K line subway directly to Kyoto Shijo, then transferred to bus No. 5, and walked a few hundred meters to Eikan-do. The maple leaves of Eikan-do are not bright red, but the gradient colors, especially the orange maple leaves, are very beautiful. Occasionally, a little sunlight hits them and it feels like flowers are blooming.
This guy’s phone is very old, but it doesn’t stop him from taking pictures of the red maple leaves🍁.
We toured Eikan-do for an hour. Then we walked to Nanzen-ji Temple using the navigation system. There is a maple tree under Nanzen-ji Temple, which is also a gradient color and looks good. We bought tickets at the ticket office on the first floor and went upstairs to have a look. As expected, the view from a higher angle was better.
After leaving Nanchan Temple, I didn’t go to Tenjuan Temple because I had been there last year. I wanted to have a hot drink, so I went to the nearest Starbucks.
I ordered a cup of Chai Tea latte, which tasted like Chinese medicine. After I came out, I didn’t know where to go today, so I searched for Kinkakuji Temple on Xiaohongshu. You need to go up to Kinkakuji Temple to see the golden effect of the sun shining on it. It’s already afternoon, so I gave up and didn’t go. It happened to be sunny now, so I just went to the Kamogawa River to take a look.
When I walked to Nijo Bridge and saw the Kamogawa River in the sun, I felt the charm of the Kamogawa River. When I walked to the river, I felt a sense of comfort that made me want to sit down and lie down and just stare blankly.
I sat by the Kamogawa River for a long time, until the sun was about to set. Then I went to the nearest Ichiran and had a bowl of ramen. It was still that thick and greasy feeling, which was exactly what I wanted to eat tonight. After eating the noodles, I took a bus back to Osaka from Shijo Kawaramachi. After I came back, it suddenly rained heavily. I bought some puddings at the convenience store. The puddings were so delicious that I wanted to eat them every day before I went back.😊
Day 6 Kyoto - Arashiyama, Kiyomizu Temple
I left home at 7:10 this morning. I calculated the time I left home by checking the map last night.
My appointment time for Youzaiting was 9 o’clock. I arrived at 8:53, waited in line for a while, and entered at 9 o’clock.
There are 3 designed shooting locations, all of which present a reflective effect. I have to say that Asians who want to make photos all their lives are very good at it. No need for any parameters, you can get very good-looking photos directly. The only disadvantage is that the ticket price is relatively high.
After leaving Yusai-tei, I went directly to JR Arashiyama Station and took a bus to the starting point of Hozugawa rafting. I booked the boat ticket in advance, and the boat was at 12 o’clock. But when I arrived at the site, I told the staff that I had purchased the ticket online. The staff wrote a note and handed it to the ticket window to scan the online ticket electronic voucher in exchange for the boat ticket. After getting the boat ticket, you can go to the riverside and wait to board the boat.
The boatman will arrange seats and distribute life jackets. After everyone gets on the boat, it starts rowing.
Sparkling water surface.
There is a hotel on the shore. When I become rich enough I also want to stay in a hotel like this😂.
After the rafting, we returned to the Arashiyama River, just below the Yuzaitei.
I have already been to Yuzaitei, the place I want to visit the most in Arashiyama this year, and I will go to Jojakkoji Temple. Passing by the observatory.
Passing through the bamboo forest.
I passed by Okochi Sanso. I went there last year, but I won’t go this year.
Unlike last year, there were a lot of tourists at Jojakkoji Temple. The red leaves were similar to the ones I saw in other places, but there were so many people that I had to take a quick look and then leave.
Today, I had another idea, which was to go to Kiyomizu Temple to watch the Kiyomizu stage at sunset. So after visiting Jojakkoji Temple, we set off for Kiyomizu Temple.
The map guide took me to the back door of Kiyomizu Temple. I didn’t expect that I would have to go through a cemetery. Luckily it was a sunny day, otherwise it would be a bit scary. I was able to survive with my righteousness.
I have never been to this three-story pagoda.
Arrived at Kiyomizu Temple.
Day 7 Uji, Nara
I woke up naturally in the morning, packed my luggage and checked out of the hotel. I went to Uji.
Today is another sunny day. After getting off at Uji Station on the Keihan Line, I went to the bakery next to JR Uji Station to store my luggage. There are very few luggage lockers at JR Uji Station, and there are probably no empty lockers unless it is off-season. I searched on Xiaohongshu and found a bakery next to the JR station that can store luggage, so I went there. It costs 700 yen for a piece of luggage regardless of size, which is a good price. After storing the luggage, I walked to the river.
I visited the same place last year. Last year, it was cloudy and the leaves had all fallen, which was a rather bleak scene. This year, it was a clear and crisp autumn day. I still sat by the river and enjoyed the inner peace. I passed by Byodo-in Temple twice but didn’t go. One reason was that I felt I had visited a lot of Buddhist temples in the past few days, and the other was that there were a lot of tourists, so it was meaningless to just look around.
At lunchtime, I wanted to go to Nakamura Tenji to eat something, but there were too many people. It felt like all the Chinese in Uji were at Nakamura Tenji and Ito Uemon. It took about an hour to queue up, and in the end, I didn’t eat at either of them. Waiting in line for an hour would make me have too high expectations for them, so I just gave up.
I took a bus to Nara in the afternoon. This time I booked a place to stay at the Nara Visitor Center. The Nara Visitor Center provides Chinese and English services, and contains a detailed guide to Nara’s history, culture, food, accommodation and transportation.
The check-in time at the Nara Visitor Center is 15:00. I arrived at about 14:30. The front desk provides free luggage storage before check-in and after check-out. When I arrived, I said that I would check in tonight and wanted to store my luggage first. The lady at the front desk (from Taiwan, speaking Chinese) received me very warmly and told me, “Sir, you are lucky. The room you booked has been cleaned and you can check in early for free.” It really provided a very happy emotional value. So the luggage was naturally put into the room😊.
After putting down my luggage, I went to the nearby Starbucks to order a hot drink, then went to FamilyMart to buy a loaf of bread, and set off to Wakakusa Mountain to wait for the sunset.
The ticket to Wakakusa Mountain is 150 yen, and you can walk directly onto this small grassy slope after entering. The entire slope is full of Chinese people.
Wow! Golden Sunset!
The wind was strong on the hillside and it was quite cold. The scenery was beautiful, with the sun shining through the clouds and casting golden rays. I sat there until sunset, then started walking back, bought some dinner at a convenience store, took a hot bath, and rested.
Day 8 Nara, Kobe
I woke up at 8am, washed, had breakfast, and packed my luggage. I checked out at 9am, stored my luggage, and went for a walk in Nara Park.
I bought deer biscuits. Once you feed them one, they will keep following you, so you can finish feeding them quickly. In the morning, they will eat biscuits before they eat anything else. In the afternoon, they will probably stop eating biscuits if they eat too much😄.
Look at them!😄
The main character 🦌
The maple leaves in the park are red and look very beautiful.
After walking around, I arrived at the entrance of Todaiji Temple. I had been there last year, but I didn’t go in this year.

Happy tourists are also part of the scenery.

The weather is so nice now!
This is the end of my trip to Nara.
Flash forward (2 hours 😅)! Arrived in Kobe.
🐱: This sea is under my control.
Those who wait for the sunset together are all lovely people!
Day 9 Osaka - Return
I had a flight at 12:20pm, and I was thinking if I could get up early to go to Rinku City. I checked and found that Rinku City Outlets only opened at 10am, so I definitely didn’t have time. So I slept until I woke up naturally, had breakfast on the first floor of the hotel, and then went back to the room to pack my luggage.
I bought some food (Ichiran Ramen, Matcha, raw chocolate) at the duty-free shop at Kansai Airport, and used up the remaining Japanese yen cash and transportation card. You can make a combination of payments (such as transportation card + cash, cash + WeChat).
